comparison of the transcriptome of Sulfolobus acidocaldarius MW001 grown on peptides alone and peptides in the presence of D-xylose allows the identification of the ABC transporter for D-xylose and L-arabinose transport. More than 10fold transcriptional upregulation is observed for the genes saci_2122 (ABC-type substrate binding protein), saci_2121 (ABC-type transmembrane domain). saci_2120 transcripts (ABC-type nucleotide binding domain) are 8.97fold upregulated in cells growing in the presence of D-xylose. ABC substrate-binding protein (saci_2122) transcripts are highly upregulated in the same range when cells are grown in the presence of all tested pentoses, i.e., D-arabinose, L-arabinose, and D-xylose, but are not induced by the other tested sugars. Transcription of the entire ABC transport system is responsive to pentoses but not to hexoses (D-glucose), disaccharides (sucrose), or polysaccharides (dextrin) |
