3.1.1.7 physiological function acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is a serine hydrolase, whose main function is to modulate neurotransmission at cholinergic synapses. It is, therefore, the primary target of some pesticides and heavy metals. Its inhibition in aquatic organisms has been used as an indicator of the presence of these pollutants in water bodies. Acetylcholinesterase is a key enzyme in the regulation of synaptic transmission. AChE promotes the hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, to ensure intermittent nerve impulses (which characterize neuronal communication) while preventing acute cholinergic syndrome that can result if this neurotransmitter accumulates in the nerve endings of the central and peripheral nervous system Hoplosternum littorale
