33 out of 34 of the primary tumors express MMP-26. Most abundant expression concentrates in grade I-II tumors. In normal esophagus, the basal cells are usually negative for MMP-26, except for occasional basal cells at the top of epidermal papillae. MMP-26 is already upregulated in dysplasia. Tumor cells making contact with islets undergoing apoptosis show prominent MMP-26 staining, and inflammation upregulates MMP-26 expression. When the invasive islet escapes through the basement membrane, MMP-26 expression becomes abundant. The pushing border of the tumor only shows dispersed MMP-26 staining, and MMP-26 does not colocalize with proliferation or apoptosis. Neoplastic islands are often positive for MMP-26. In 2 out of 4 lymph nodes, MMP-26 is detected in metastatic tumor cells, where individual cancer cells expressed MMP-26 on the border of apoptotic areas non-neoplastic epithelium |
