insertion mutations in the subunits cpcE and cpcF genes, and an deletion mutation affecting both genes all lead to similar phenytopes. The strains are yellow-green in color, have doubling times approximately twice that of the wild-type strain, and fail to accumulate normal levels of phycocyanin. The strains contain substantial amounts of apparently normal phycocyanin beta subunits, while the majority of the phycocyanin alpha subunit (about 90%) does not carry a phycocyanobilin chromophore
