The production process of androstenedione is mainly the degradation of the phytosterol aliphatic side chain, which is accompanied by the production of propionyl CoA. Excessive accumulation of intracellular propionyl-CoA produces a toxic effect in mycobacteria, which restricts the improvement of production efficiency.
