The interrupted gene is identified to be slr2094 (fbp1), which encodes the FBPase/sedoheptulose-1,7-biphosphatase bifunctional enzyme. Two other independently constructed slr2094 mutants by targeted insertion show an identical phenotype. The FBPase activity is found to be virtually lacking in an slr2094 mutant, which is sensitive to light under mixotrophic growth conditions Synechocystis sp.
