General Information

General Information Comment Organism
physiological function the obligate biotrophic pathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae causes clubroot disease in Arabidopsis thaliana, which is characterized by large root galls. Salicylic acid production is a defence response in plants, and its methyl ester is involved in systemic signalling. Plasmodiophora brassicae suppresses the plant defence reactions via its methyltransferase, PbBSMT with homology to plant methyltransferases. The PbBSMT gene is maximally transcribed when salicylic acid production is highest, and enzyme PbBSMT can methylate salicylic acid, benzoic and anthranilic acids. Plasmodiophora brassicae secretes enzyme PbBSMT into the host cell, where it methylates the defence signal salicylate. The resulting methyl salicylate fails to upregulate plant defence reactions and is transmitted to leaves, where it is emitted or converted back to salicylate Plasmodiophora brassicae
