For saponin biosynthesis pathway, the genes encoding HMGS, MVK, ispF, ispG, ispH and FPPS enzymes are high expressed in three-year rhizomes, and these gene expression pattern is consistent with the accumulation pattern of total saponin with the rhizome development.
