This DELTA9-desaturation reaction normally requires molecular oxygen and reducing equivalents derived from NAD(P)H through an electron system consisting of either NADPH, cytochrome b5 and cytochrome b5-reductase in animals and fungi or ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase and ferredoxin in bacteria and plants
