The enzyme has been characterized from mammals and from the bacterium Streptantibioticus cattleyicolor. In mammals it hydrolyses excess 4′-phosphopantetheine to prevent cell damage. In S. cattleyicolor it participates in the biosynthesis of the β-lactam antibiotic thienamycin.

The expected taxonomic range for this enzyme is: Eukaryota, Bacteria
