Substrates: attachment of the cationic sugar 4-amino-4-deoxy-L-arabinose to lipid A is required for the maintenance of polymyxin resistance in Salmonella typhimurium. Lipid A molecules containing a Kdo disaccharide are modified with two 4-amino-4-deoxy-alpha-L-arabinose units (at the 1-phosphate moiety and at the 4'-phosphate moiety), indicating that the addition of L-Ara4N to the 4'-position is KDO-dependent. ArnT is a bifunctional glycosyltransferase in that it can incorporate two 4-amino-4-deoxy-alpha-L-arabinose units. Transfer to lipid A occurs on the periplasmic side of the inner membrane Products: -
