reaction does not involve intermediate formation of malonyl-CoA but proceeds directly with free malonate. Catalytic mechanism involves exchange of the enzyme-bound acetyl residues by malonyl residues and subsequent decarboxylation releasing CO2 and regenerating the acetyl-enzyme.
