General Information

General Information Comment Organism
physiological function upon silencing of the JIH1 gene by RNA interference, jasmonoyl-L-isoleucine levels increase dramatically after simulated herbivory , compared with wild-type plants. When specialist (Manduca sexta) or generalist (Spodoptera littoralis) herbivores feed on silenced plants they gain significantly less mass compared with those feeding on wild-type plants. The poor larval performance is strongly correlated with the higher accumulation of several jasmonoyl-L-isoleucine-dependent direct defense metabolites in silenced plants. In the field, these plants attract substantially more Geocoris predators to the experimentally attached Manduca sexta eggs on their leaves, compared with empty vector plants Nicotiana attenuata
