The enzyme, characterized from the plants Sinopodophyllum hexandrum and Podophyllum peltatum, catalyses the formation of a methylenedioxy-bridge. It is involved in the biosynthesis of podophyllotoxin, a non-alkaloid toxin lignan whose derivatives are important anticancer drugs.
the enzyme is capable of converting (-)-matairesinol into (-)-pluviatolide by catalyzing methylenedioxy bridge formation and does not act on other possible substrates tested, i.e. (+)-pinoresinol, (-)-pinoresinol, (-)-arctigenin, (-)-alpha-conidendrin, (+)-piperitol, (-)-piperitol, and (+)-phillygenin
