The enzyme, characterized from the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942, catalyses the covalent attachment of the phycobilin chromophore phycocyanobilin to cysteine 84 of the alpha subunit of the phycobiliprotein C-phycocyanin.
